The job of Network Analyst at SoftLayer consists of review, study, and reporting of many aspects of a complex Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Provider’s network system. The Network Analyst works within the Network Operations department to provide valuable information to the networking staff regarding systems performance, capacity, and anomalies to guide direction for strategic actions or improvements. The candidate will be assigned projects as required to assist with various needs within the networking organization, and is expected to be able to create and maintain tools utilizing basic scripting languages (Perl, PHP, shell scripting) and accessing database and API sources as may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Maintain a variety of commercial and open-source netflow collection and analysis systems
• Make adjustments and improvements to existing network monitoring systems
• Review network performance and capacity
• Analyze data from tools to determine areas of improvement, and provide recommendations based on findings
• Assist with network resource management tasks such as router ports, Intellectual Property (IP) addresses, parts sparing inventory, backbone and peering capacity
• Create and provide recurring and ad-hoc reports of various network statistics
• Manage assigned projects and program components to deliver services in accordance with established objectives
• Respond to inquiries from staff, service providers, outside vendors, etc. to provide technical assistance and support with respect to networking needs and issues
• Develop and socialize network solutions as may be necessary to meet business requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
• Ability to perform multiple, technical, highly complex tasks with need to regularly upgrade skills to meet dynamic job conditions
• Review and interpret complex technical information and analyze situation to define issues, draw conclusions, and make recommendations
• Ability to schedule activities and meetings, gather and collate data
• Flexibility to independently work with others in variety of circumstances
• Ability to set and follow priorities
• Ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences
• Ability to understand Cisco and Juniper router configurations
• Diagramming skills with Microsoft Visio or similar applications
• Knowledge of current networking and application protocols and topologies
• Familiarity with other non-core network applications (DNS, load balancers, firewalls, server operating systems)
• Demonstrated technical problem isolation/solving skills across computer platforms, applications, and networking devices
• Demonstrated analytical and technical reporting skills


Education/Experience:
• Bachelors in Science degree in a computer technology field or equivalent experience
• At least 5 years work experience in a large-scale, service provider Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking organization
• Experienced in developing and implementing systems management tools and processes to support capacity, alerting, and performance management Required
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • At least 5 years experience in large-scale, service provider TCP/IP networking organization
  • Basic knowledge in developing and implementing systems management tools and processes to support capacity, alerting, and performance management
  • English: Fluent
Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology
