Job Description:The Intellectual Property (IP) Attorney will work in an innovative and collaborative IBM Patent Center of excellence focused on a broad range of technologies representing the entire IBM development environment. Within the IBM Patent Center, the IP Attorney will be responsible for writing, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). In addition, the IP Attorney will lead and mentor a work group of early career Patent Engineering Professionals and an IP Legal Assistant in the preparation, filing, and prosecution of U.S. patent applications and work on developing the best process for doing such patent procurement work in a high volume mode.
The preferred candidate will bring patent application drafting skills, team leading, and collaborative approaches to patent application preparation and prosecution models. They will also be responsible for reviewing invention disclosures and patentability search results, drafting patent applications, and the eventual prosecution of patent applications filed in the USPTO. This team leader will also mentor others on the patent application drafting and prosecution process and communicate with others in IBM to optimize the patent application preparation and prosecution process to achieve the quality and cost objectives of the IBM Patent Center. Patent application drafting, prosecution, and communication and mentoring skills are needed for this lead position to work with team members, inventors and intellectual property professionals throughout IBM.
Qualified candidates will be familiar with patent laws, patent application preparation rules, and practice before the USPTO, as well as best practices for preparing U.S. patent applications for counterpart filing outside of US.
Required: JD degree with admission to at least one state bar and USPTO registration
Preferred: Bachelors or Master's degree in a computer oriented technology such as Computer Science, Engineering, or Electrical Engineering Required
